Electronic systems continue to incorporate new functionality, while being forced into ever decreasing board-space allocations. Designers validate the interoperability of these new system requirements in unconstrained breadboards, but the productization challenge is to maintain proper timing between the various subsystems, while consolidating components to save cost, space and power. An obvious component to consider is a programmable timing device to eliminate discrete crystals, oscillators and other clock devices.

From the leader in timing solutions, the IDT VersaClock™ one-time programmable (OTP) EPROM timing devices and accompanying easy-to-use software provides system-specific solutions without the need for prior PLL expertise.

An individual programmable clock device can provide up to 6 different output frequencies simultaneously from a single crystal or clock input. The IDT VersaClock software minimizes the number of PLLs, thereby reducing power consumption and output jitter in the design. Each output is provided with a color bar solution grade to allow designers the opportunity to quickly trade off clock accuracy for jitter performance.

Additional functionality is incorporated into the IDT VersaClock devices to allow low skew clock fan-outs, EMI reducing spread spectrum frequency modulation or VCXO input voltage control for those applications that must lock to external system clocks. Output VDD control provides the ability to drive outputs between 1.8 – 3.3V.

Most of the IDT VersaClock devices have multiple address registers, allowing processor control of output frequencies. This function may be used to provide different system speed/power modes, to turn off unused subsystems, to provide multi-regional support or to just consolidate multiple projects on a single device. Since all address registers may be independently configured – including input frequency – addresses may be allocated to different projects.

The table will help you select the device that best suits your application.

All devices are available in commercial and industrial temperature ranges, as well as RoHS-compliant packaging.

IDT VersaClock™ timing devices and software easily takes designs from prototype to manufacture

  • Simplify timing schemes
  • Consolidate crystals, oscillators, clock buffers and EMI reducing spread spectrum synthesizers into one device
  • Easy-to-use software optimizes design and provides feedback for performance trade offs

IDT ICS280 clock synthesizers replace multiple crystals and oscillators

ICS251
The ICS251 is a low cost, single-output, field programmable clock synthesizer. The ICS251 can generate an output frequency from 314kHz to 200MHz and may employ Spread Spectrum techniques to reduce system electro-magnetic interference (EMI). Using ICS' VersaClock™ software to configure the PLL and output, the ICS251 contains a One-Time Programmable (OTP) ROM to allow field programmability. Programming features include 4 selectable configuration registers. The device employs Phase-Locked Loop (PLL) techniques to run from a standard fundamental mode, inexpensive crystal, or clock. It can replace multiple crystals and oscillators, saving board space and cost. The device also has a power-down feature that tri-states the clock outputs and turns off the PLLs when the PDTS pin is taken low. The ICS251 is also available in factory programmed custom versions for high-volume applications.
