Micrel's MIC2297 can be used to drive a string of 10 white LEDs at 20mA, ensuring a high level of brightness while requiring very few ballast resistors.

The device is a 600kHz, PWM boost-switching regulator with an internal 40V switch and a guaranteed switch current of 1.2A. It employs constant frequency, PWM control and the high frequency allows smaller external components to be used, reducing the board space requirement. An additional benefit of the MIC2297's constant frequency PWM operation is lower noise.

To optimize efficiency, the feedback voltage is set to 200mV. This low voltage supports a minimal level of power dissipation in the current set resistor. It also provides a low total output voltage, minimizing the current drawn from the battery.

The MIC2297 is available with output over voltage protection. It safeguards the IC and external components in the event of open LED conditions.

The MIC2297 helps produce high brightness light while optimizing power efficiency
