The U-CAN Stick from Infineon allows both experienced and beginning CAN designers a jump start in realizing the advantages of implementing a Controller Area Network.

For more than a decade, CAN has been used as a robust serial bus for board to board communication in noisy environments such as automobile and industrial control systems. While the protocol was originally developed for automotive, it has quickly spread to industrial controls, printing, medical systems and also serves as a maintenance bus in router equipment. The benefits of the protocol include hardware based automatic error detection and guaranteed message delivery and support of transmissions speeds up to
1 Mb/sec.

Infineon offers two types of CAN modules within its families of 8, 16 and 32-bit processors. Both the Twin CAN, available in the 16-bit family, and the Multi CAN, offered in the new 8-bit and 32-bit families, have a minimum of 32 and up to 128 unique message objects or mailboxes, making it easier to store and process messages. Each of the message objects may be individually assigned to either of the CAN nodes on the device and each message object has its own identifier and mask register. The modules also offer built in FIFOs where message objects may be grouped to handle messages transmitted repetitively with low latency. Additionally, there is an Automatic Gateway to transfer messages between message objects without CPU intervention, even if the nodes are operating at different baud rates.

With built-in functions such as the FIFO, Automatic Gateway and unique message identifiers and mask registers for each of the message objects, the Infineon CAN solutions far surpass other available embedded microcontroller solutions.
