LUXEON^® K2 Sets New Standard in Power LED Brightness

New LUXEON® K2 power LEDs from Philips Lumileds have assumed the position of the world’s brighest solid-state light source, enabling enhanced controllability, reliability and economy across a wide range of lighting applications.

 

Thanks to process and packaging technology advances, LUXEON K2 power LEDs will accept drive currents up to 1.5A, delivering high light output and a long effective lifetime. Eight colors are available, and the white variants produce more than 140 lumens to satisfy the requirements of automotive, outdoor and concert lighting at a low cost per lumen. Long lifetimes of 70% lumen maintenance after 50,000 hours at 1A enhance reliability, reduce replacement rates and contribute to low running costs for all kinds of high output lighting arrays.

The LUXEON K2 surface mount package has a low thermal resistance of 9°C/W, which not only supports high drive currents for unrivalled light output, but also eases thermal management engineering. The package also has alignment features and datum reference points, enabling precision assembly in products where tight positioning tolerance is critical.

Advances in power LED fabrication allow the industry’s highest maximum junction temperature, at 185°C, which has important benefits for thermal design and light output. Engineers can deliver more light in existing applications by driving LEDs at higher currents without adding cost and design time to revise thermal management engineering. High performance is also possible in environments with severe heat conditions. In other applications, heat sinks can be reduced or even eliminated to reduce cost and physical size.
