The PowerQUICC II Pro family excels in high performance embedded applications requiring basic network connectivity as well as specialized protocol processing applications found in netcomm, entry level home office, industrial control or medical device designs.

The PowerQUICC II Pro Family consists of the MPC8313E, MPC8323E, MPC8349E and MPC8360E devices that are all based on Freescale’s e300 Power Architecture™ core. Scaled from 200-667MHz operating frequency (2 instructions per MHz) while consuming in operation 2W to 8W, they provide high performance in an aggressive power envelope.

The Family offers two lines based on the connectivity required by your application – Ethernet “only” and hardware assisted protocol processing. The MPC8313E and MPC8349E family offer high speed Ethernet controllers with a mix of other peripherals for high performance connected embedded control. The MPC8323E family and MPC8360E are super set devices that offer hardware assisted protocol processing capabilities above the “Ethernet only” devices.

As our newest member for cost effective embedded control, the MPC8313E integrates Power Management for “sleep-mode” applications and high speed networking peripherals – 2 x 10/100/ 1000 Ethernet controllers and 480Mbps USB (PHY on board) and PCI. Floating Point, DDR2 SRAM control and hardware security acceleration round out the features.

At the opposite end of the PowerQUICC II Pro family is the MPC8360E, which operates up to 667MHz and provides up to 2 Gigabit Ethernet or 8 10/100 Ethernet ports and hardware assisted protocol processing.

Whether your system is power-sensitive, computationally demanding or I/O intensive, Freescale Semiconductor offers the scalable processing performance, breadth of connectivity technology, and integration expertise to address the design challenge.

QUICC Engine™ Technology

A new single-RISC version of the QUICC Engine™ communications engine forms the heart of the networking capability of the MPC8323E. The QUICC Engine block contains several peripheral controllers and a single 32-bit reduced instruction set computing (RISC) controller. Unique microcode packages provide support for NAT, Firewall, IPSec, and Advanced Quality of Service (QoS). Protocol support is provided by the main workhorses of the device - the unified communication controllers (UCCs). Each of the five UCCs can support a variety of communication protocols:

  • 10/100 Mbps Ethernet
  • Asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) support up to OC-3 speeds
  • Serial ATM
  • Multi-physical layer (PHY) ATM
  • High-level data link control (HDLC)
  • Time division multiplexing (TDM)
  • Binary synchronous communications protocol (BISYNC)
  • UCC can also support USB 2.0 (full/low speed)

In addition, the QUICC Engine can also support a Universal Test and Operations PHY Interface for ATM (UTOPIA) level 2 for up to 31 multi-PHY.

Hardware Security Engine

The security engine (SEC 2.2) on the MPC8323E and MPC8321E allows CPU-intensive cryptographic operations to be off-loaded from the main CPU core. The security-processing accelerator provides hardware acceleration for DES, 3DES, Advanced Encryption Standard (AES), Secure Hash Algorithm (SHA)-1 and MD-5 algorithms.

System Interface Unit

The MPC8323E family also includes a 32-bit double data rate (DDR)-1/DDR/2 memory controller, a 32-bit peripheral component interconnect (PCI) controller, a 16-bit local bus and four direct memory access (DMA) channels
