SAW Filters and Resonators: Smaller Packages and Lower Costs

Remote keyless entry, tire pressure monitoring and other short range wireless, low data rate systems employing EPCOS SAW filters have been successfully integrated and widely accepted by the automotive industry for years. Now, an even larger market is emerging for home convenience, security and access, RFID tagging, set top boxes, home entertainment and meter reading.


A world leader in SAW technology, EPCOS now offers wide and narrow and SAW filters, as well as resonators in a hermetically sealed 3 x 3mm2 ceramic package that cuts board space up to 64% compared to previous packages - and at significantly lower cost. This meets the demand to replace wide band LC-combinations in receivers and transmitters with low cost, but frequency stable, SAW filters and resonators. Designed initially for the automotive industry, the SAW structure is protected by a passivation system and fulfills the toughest qualification requirements, including the automotive “Blue Book” AEC-Q200.

EPCOS provides SAW resonators in a one-port version with narrow or broader initial tolerances for transmitters with the very reliable frequency modulation or simpler amplitude modulation in a 3 x 3 mm2 package. Two-port variants are also available in these dimensions. So now, even more applications can achieve the benefits of miniaturization:


  • More compact design for a higher level of integration
  • Implementation of simple, reliable, highly cost effective transmitters and local oscillators in receivers

In addition to low production costs and small form factors, EPCOS SAW filters and resonators meet high durability and reliability requirements in systems exposed to extreme environmental conditions, such as automated meter readers.

The spectrum of these lead free RoHS-compliant SMD devices ranges from 315MHz (B3731/R961), 345MHz (R965), 433MHz (R960), over the ISM bands 868MHz and 915MHz (B3588/R2906), up to GPS 1,575MHz (B3520).
