Freescale Semiconductors has launched the 16-bit MC56F8011 Digital Signal Controller (DSC), a memory reduction of the highly popular MC56F8013.

Freescale’s digital signal controller architecture combines, on a single chip, the processing power of a digital signal processor (DSP) with the functionality of a microcontroller. With 12Kbytes of Flash, 2Kbytes of SRAM and a flexible set of peripherals, the 56F8011 is a low cost, high performance 16-bit solution for motor control applications in the industrial, white goods and household appliance markets that require a greater number of pulse-width modulators (PWMs).

The MC56F8011 device will be offered in a single RoHS-compliant 32-bit LQFP package and will be fully pin compatible with higher memory version, the MC56F8013.

In particular one application area where accurate and low cost motor control is becoming more necessary is that of the household appliance. Within this application space, manufacturers are being driven by regulatory requirements such as IEC60730 that aim to increase the system integrity and safety of the control circuitry. The new 56F8000 devices incorporate a number of features designed to comply with such regulations, including an independently clocked watchdog timer and the capability to verify Flash memory contents. Both of these features allow system designers to guard against conditions, such as code runaway, that could potentially induce an unsafe state in their end products.

Due to its configuration flexibility, and compact program code, the cost effective 56F8011 not just suited for motor control applications, but a host of other applications such as DC-to-DC power conversion. The 56F8011 is a member of the 56800E core-based family of digital signal controllers which utilizes a Harvard architecture consisting of three execution units operating in parallel, allowing as many as six operations per instruction cycle. The microprocessor-style programming model and optimized instruction set allow straightforward generation of efficient, compact code for both DSP and MCU applications.

Freescale offers a technical support package to allow designers to migrate easily from the initial evaluation of the product through to production. This will include a demonstration board with debug capability and integrated JTAG interface, simplifying the design process. The EVB package also contains the CodeWarrior Special Edition Software, which includes a free 16Kbyte code version of the CodeWarrior Integrated Development Environment (including Processor Expert initialization tool).

Award-Winning Development Environment

Processor Expert™(PE) technology provides a rapid application design (RAD) tool that combines easy-to-use component-based software application creation with an expert knowledge system.

The CodeWarrior™ Integrated Development Environment (IDE) is a sophisticated tool for code navigation, compiling and debugging. A complete set of evaluation modules (EVMs) and development system cards will support concurrent engineering. Together, PE, CodeWarrior tools and EVMs create a complete, scalable tools solution for easy, fast and efficient development.
