Freescale Semiconductor is pleased to announce the launch of the MC56F802x/3x family – the latest additions to its high performance, low cost digital signal controller (DSC) family of devices, based on the 56F8000 architecture. With the introduction of these four devices, Freescale has significantly broadened the array of cost effective DSC choices and application possibilities for customers.

With the 56F8000 family, consumer and industrial products that previously required both digital and analog control algorithms and circuits can now be controlled digitally through flexible, intelligent embedded software running on a DSC.

One application area where the need for accurate and low cost motor control is prevalent is that of the household appliance. Within this application space, manufacturers are being driven by regulatory requirements to increase the system integrity and safety of their control circuitry. The new 56F8000 devices incorporate a number of features designed to comply with the latest regulations, including an independently clocked Watchdog timer and the capability to verify Flash memory contents. Both features allow system designers to guard against conditions such as code runaway, that could potentially induce an unsafe state in their end products.

FEATURES
  • 32MHz 56800E core
  • Up to 64K program Flash
  • Up to 8KB of program/data RAM
  • IIC, 2 x QSPI, 2 x QSCI, MSCAN
  • 6 output PWM module, clocked at up to 96MHz
  • 2 x 8ch 12-bit ADCs
  • 2 x 12-bit digital to analog converters
  • 2 x analog comparators

APPLICATIONS
  • Motor control - refrigerator compressors, dishwashers, conveyor belts
  • Digital power conversion - AC-DC power supplies, UPS and frequency inverters
  • Advanced lighting control - high brightness LED arrays for architectural lighting and LCD backlights

Feature Set

Adding to the current line up, the additions to 56F8000 family offer an advanced peripheral set including Digital-to-Analog Converters (DAC) and Analog Comparators, both of which enable reduced design costs through the elimination of external components and associated circuitry. Also included, on the higher memory devices, is a Multi-Scalable Controller Area Network (MSCAN) 2.0 A/B, providing robust, high-performance connectivity for industrial applications.

MC56F8037EVM - DSC Evaluation Board

Freescale offers an excellent technical support package to allow the designer to migrate easily from the initial evaluation of the product through to production. An evaluation board will be available with debug capability, and integrated JTAG interface simplifying the design process.

The EVB package also contains the CodeWarrior Special Edition Software (CWX-568-SE), which includes a free 16Kbyte code version of the CodeWarrior Integrated Development Environment (including Processor Expert initialization tool).

The MC56F8037EVM evaluation module allows easier and faster development for 56F802x and 56F803x digital signal controllers. The module includes an MC56F8037 digital signal controller, RS-232 interface, user LEDs, user pushbutton switches and a daughter card connector.
