Ramtron Offers Two Tiny Half Megabit Serial FRAM Products for Industrial Control

Page Contents:   [ Featured Products | Datasheets | Application Notes | Buy Now ]

Ramtron has extended its serial memory portfolio with the FM24C512, a 512kB nonvolatile RAM with a 2-wire interface, and the FM25L512, a 512kB, 3V nonvolatile RAM with SPI interface. They are pin-compatible replacements for equivalent EEPROMs, only better. These devices collect critical data at bus speed, with virtually unlimited endurance and low power.

Ramtron also offers the FM20L08, a one-megabit (Mbit), 3V nonvolatile FRAM product in a 32-pin TSOP (thin small outline plastic) package.

Application Notes for Serial 2-Wire FRAM Memory

Interrupting a 2-Wire Read (PDF)
The industry standard 2-wire bus is a robust protocol for a variety of applications. Unfortunately, it has one limitation that system developers may encounter. Interrupting a memory read in progress may be difficult. The 2-wire protocol does not offer a graceful method to accomplish this. This situation is not unique to the serial FRAM devices, but this application note explains the method for clearing the condition.

Microchip MCU to 2-Wire FRAM (PDF)

This application note provides source code to interface Microchip microcontrollers to Ramtron 2-wire FRAM devices. Although the specific example uses a Microchip PIC16X7x and PIC16C8x with the FM24C04 memory, it is intended to be useful for other Microchip devices as well. It highlights the performance improvement gained by fast FRAM writes, as well as the interface simplification. This application note was written by Bob Axtell of Micro-Firmware. Contact information is provided within the application note.

Differences in FM24Cxx and FM24CxxA (PDF)

There are differences between “A” and “non-A” two-wire 4Kb and 16Kb FRAM devices. The FM24C04 and FM24C16 memory devices operate up to 400kHz, whereas the FM24C04A and FM24C16A operate at speeds up to 1MHz. There is also a functional difference between A and non-A parts, which involves the write protect pin WP. The original non-A parts protect the upper half of the memory array when WP is high. The new A parts protect the entire memory array when WP is high. Lastly, the A devices implement an internal pull down on the WP pin.

A Word about High Endurance

FRAM is known for high write endurance. Until now, some applications needed more cycles than FRAM could offer. No longer! The FM20L08 offers virtually unlimited read/write cycles. You can now access each address a million times per second for hundreds of years with no wear out.
