The New Low Power Gigahertz MPC8544E PowerQUICC™ III Processor
|
The PowerQUICC™ III processor family delivers gigahertz-plus communications processing performance and integrated features required by enterprise networking, telecom transmission and switching, 3G wireless infrastructure, storage and high end imaging markets. |
The PowerQUICC III Family consists of the MPC8548E, MPC8560, MPC8568 and the MPC8544 all based on Freescales e500 Power Architecture core. Scaled from 633-1.5GHz operating frequency, these processors offer a wide range of high-speed connectivity options, including Gigabit Ethernet, Serial RapidIO® technology SATA and PCI Express. Support for these high-speed interfaces enables scalable connectivity to network processors and/or ASICs in the data plane while the PowerQUICC III handles complex, computationally demanding control plane processing tasks. These processors also feature a next-generation double data rate (DDRII) memory controller, enhanced, Gigabit Ethernet support, double precision floating point and integrated security engines that support the Kasumi algoirthm needed for 3G wireless security. In addition, support is provided for XOR acceleration needed for parity in storage applications, in many of the PowerQUICC processor cores.
As the newest member of the
PowerQUICC III processor family, the
MPC8544E is designed to address
the growing demand for advanced
interconnect technologies enabling
increased data bandwidth while consuming
only 3.75W estimated typical core power
at a gigahertz operation. This low power operation
greatly reduces the challenges of thermal management
in fanless embedded applications, while providing
1GHz+ performance.
The highly flexible MPC8544E processor is well suited for network routers, industrial controllers, imaging systems, enterprise wireless access points and video surveillance/conferencing equipment.
The MPC8544E, based on the e500 processor core, enables significant reuse of the extensive ecosystem that exists for PowerQUICC III processors. The device, operating at clock speeds from 667MHz up to 1.067GHz, provides a wide range of advanced high speed connectivity options including two integrated Gigabit Ethernet (GigE) controllers with SGMII interfaces, and three PCI Express® ports, and legacy PowerQUICC III interfaces such as PCI, I2C, dual universal asynchronous receiver/transmitters (DUART) and local bus connections. These processors are designed to feature a next generation double data rate (DDR2) memory controller, v2 e500 double precision floating point and the field proven PowerQUICC III integrated security engines.
The MPC8544E is available in a 783-pin FC PBGA package and will be offered in extended industrial temperature ranges from -40ºC to 105ºCelsius (Tj).
