Micrel’s 3.2Gbps Limiting Amplifier Featuring Programmable Decision Threshold Enhances Receiver BER Performance in WDM Systems

Micrel’s SY88353BL, a low power, high sensitivity, high performance 3.2Gbps limiting post amplifier, is an ideal channel receiver for Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) systems. This new device, housed in a tiny 3mm x 3mm MLF® package, provides low noise CML data output and chatter free open-collector TTL Loss-of-Signal (LOS) indication output with fast assert/de-assert timing. It is optimized for CWDM and DWDM channel receivers supporting protocols such as Gigabit Ethernet, 1X and 2X Fiber Channel and OC-3/STM-1 through OC-48/STM-16.

As more carriers are expanding their networks to meet the growing demand for higher bandwidth, additional WDM systems are deployed. Because WDM systems use Erbium Doped Fiber Amplifiers (EDFA) and Raman amplifiers, amplified spontaneous emissions (ASE), an asymmetric noise that generally distributes more on the logic one level, are also introduced into the system. This noise causes signal degradations and consequently affects the system’s bit error rate (BER) performance. Micrel’s SY88353BL addresses this problem by offering the decision threshold adjustment feature which allows the eye crossing to be moved away from the noise floor.

The SY88353BL limiting post amplifier provides a unique pin at which a variable DC signal can be applied to dynamically adjust output signal crossing from 20 to 80 percent. This feature also eliminates input DC offsets in DC coupled applications, minimizes jitter caused by duty cycle distortion and ultimately, optimizes BER performance. The SY88353BL operates from a single 3.3V power supply, over temperatures ranging from -40ºC to +85ºC. Input signals with data rates from 155Mbps up to 3.2Gbps and as small as 5mV pp, can be amplified to drive devices with CML or PECL inputs.
