Smaller, Brighter Power LEDs Push Design Possibilities

Developments in packaging, phosphor and die
technology offer enhanced power handling and
lumens-per mm2 performance, facilitating
densely packed LED arrays as well as slimmer end
product designs.
This increased performance is delivered at
the industry’s lowest cost-per lumen, allowing
advanced, power LED light sources to become cost
effective in an even wider variety of equipment
and locations. Further benefits of this LED family
include reduced thermal design overheads,
achieved through a high maximum permitted
junction temperature of 150°C and a thermal
resistance of 10°C/W from the junction to the
thermal pad. This allows arrays to be assembled
on ordinary FR4 substrates, and allows the use
of smaller external heatsinks. The LUXEON Rebel
family is also qualified for
automotive applications.
The LUXEON Rebel range
of power LEDs includes
the color options: green,
cyan, blue, royal blue, red,
red/orange and amber.
In addition, white LUXEON
Rebel LEDs are available in
cool-white, neutral white or
warm-white shades with a
nominal color temperature of
6500K, 4100K and 3000K
respectively. This enhances flexibility for designers
to achieve the optimal white-LED light output
for applications requiring very pure white light
or those requiring warmer shades such as for
architectural effects.
In addition to the broad choice of colors and
enhanced color-mixing properties, LUXEON Rebel
LEDs display the industry’s lowest variation of
color temperature with viewing angle, leading to
greater consistency and fidelity of color replication.
The white, green, cyan, blue and royal blue LEDs
are able to operate at up to 1000mA drive current
and 150°C maximum junction temperature, while
the red, red/orange and amber colors operate up
to 700mA and 135°C.
The LUXEON Rebel range features the industry’s
best lumen maintenance performance. Projected
lumen maintenance for the 1000mA capable
devices is 70% after 50,000 hours driven
continuously at 700mA. The red, red/orange
and amber LEDs are projected at 70% lumen
maintenance after 50,000 hours at 350mA.
