Smaller and Smarter

Melexis’ MLX90614 IR Thermometer Chip is the world’s most highly integrated and intelligent IR temperature solution on the market. At the core of MLX90614 is a single or dual IR thermopile, combined with on-board low-noise amplifier, 17-bit ADC and powerful DSP unit. This all in a single TO-39 “can” package, with no need for external components or signal conditioning circuitry.

Plug and Play

No need for external components makes the MLX90614 a low-cost “plug-and-play” solution for any high-accuracy IR thermometer or transducer, capable of measuring to better than 0.2°C.

The output is provided in SMBus or continuous PWM format. Melexis designs and manufacturers the entire system from an ISO/TS 16949 certified automotive background.

  • Single and dual-zone versions ideal for auto HVAC applications
  • Small size, low cost, easy to integrate
  • Measurement resolution of 0.02°C
  • SMBus compatible digital interface
  • Customizable PWM output
  • Simple adaptation for 8 to 16V applications
  • Power saving mode
  • Automotive grade

The MLX90614 is an InfraRed thermometer for non contact temperature measurements. Both the IR sensitive thermopile detector chip and the signal conditioning ASIC are integrated in the same TO-39 can.

Integrated into the MLX90614 are a low noise amplifier, 17-bit ADC and powerful DSP unit thus achieving high accuracy and resolution of the thermometer.

The thermometer comes factory calibrated with a digital SMBus output giving full access to the measured temperature in the complete temperature range(s) with a resolution of 0.02°C.

The user can configure the digital output to be PWM. As a standard, the 10-bit PWM is configured to continuously transmit the measured temperature in range of -20 to 120°C, with an output resolution of 0.14°C.

FEATURES AND BENEFITS
  • Factory calibrated in wide temperature range: -40 to 125°C for sensor temperature and -70 to 380°C for object temperature.
  • High accuracy of 0.5°C over wide temperature range (0..+50 C for both Ta and To)
  • Medical accuracy of 0.1°C in a limited temperature range available on request
  • Measurement resolution of 0.01°C
  • Available in 3V and 5V versions
  • Different package options for applications and measurements versatility
APPLICATIONS
  • Window Condensation (Fogging) Sensing and Prediction
Windscreen fogging is one of the top 10 problems of the automotive HVAC industry. In combination with humidity sensor Melexis IR sensors, mounted behind the windscreen, can be used to predict the occurrence of a fogging condition prior to fog forming on the glass.
  • Comfort Sensing
For climate control systems, Melexis is involved in virtually every domain that involves communication with the ECU. They introduced IR temperature sensing as a more accurate and cost-effective alternative for measuring body temperature. (Instead of measuring a sample of the air, our IR modules measure directly the body temperature. Its digital sensor interface allowed us to solve the traditional burdens of reliability and design complexity to use IR technology in cars.)
  • Seat Occupant Detection
Smart frontal airbags make use of Seat Occupant Detection and deploy in two different sizes and at different pressures, depending on seat position, safety belt usage and crash severity.

Understanding MLX90614 On-chip Digital Signal Filters

It focuses on the on-chip signal filtering feature, implemented in digital part of that IC. This feature allows a trade-off between refresh rate (settling time) and noise reduction. On-chip filtering can also be used to dampen short pulse disturbances.
