Smallest DC-to-DC Controller for 24V DC Bus Systems

The SP6125 and SP6126 are PWM controlled step down (buck) voltage mode regulators with VIN feedforward and internal Type-II compensation. They operate from 4.5V to 29V, making them suitable for 5V, 12V and 24V applications. By using a PMOS driver, these devices are capable of operating at 100% duty cycle. The high side driver is designed to drive the gate 5V below VIN. The programmable overcurrent protection is based on high side MOSFET’s ON resistance sensing and allows setting the overcurrent protection value up to a 300mV threshold (measured from VIN-LX). They are available in a space saving 6-pin TSOT package making them the smallest controller available capable of operating from 24V DC supplies.

Typical Applications Circuit

Operating Efficiency

  • Efficiency is a choice between solution size and cost
    • SP6125 (300kHz) will be more efficient but larger
    • SP6127 (1300kHz) will be less efficient but smaller
    • Higher switching frequency reduces efficiency
  • 5V and 12V efficiency can be improved with more costly FET
  • 24V efficiency shown above indicates FETs can support more output current
    • Efficiency has not started to drop

SP6125 Demonstration Board

FEATURES
  • 30V to 3.3V @ 3A
  • Needs larger input cap to support Vin – could use SMT electrolytic of lower cost
  • Uses 40V PFET

**10K resistor on output only required for Enable function on demo board if no load on output

SP6126 Demonstration Board

FEATURES
  • 12V to 3.3V @ 2A
  • Lower voltage can use smaller components
  • Cin 16V
  • PFET 30V

**10K resistor on output only required for Enable function on demo board if no load on output
