128Mb MirrorBit® SPI Flash Memory Combines Performance, Simplicity and Low Cost
|
The 128Mb MirrorBit® SPI FL Flash memory from Spansion (S25FL128P) helps embedded system designers to reduce design complexity and cost, while ensuring they can quickly and reliably store and execute rising amounts of application code. The new 128Mb MirrorBit SPI is the industry’s highest performance 128Mbit Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI) device, up to 50% faster than competing offerings. |
Featuring an access speed of 104MHz, the 128Mb
MirrorBit SPI solution allows designers to take advantage
of the inherent cost savings and design simplicity
associated with a serial interface, while benefiting
from industry leading performance and high density.
Fast access times can speed boot-up of high end
printers, networking equipment and set-top boxes,
while higher densities allow designers to incorporate
more sophisticated
application code for increased
innovation and
richer functionality.
The use of serial,
rather than parallel
data transfer, requires
fewer connections and
pins per package. This
simplifies design, lowers
cost and reduces
overall space requirements. A variety of microprocessor,
ASIC and FPGA vendors currently implement
serial interfaces, making the device highly suitable
for low cost and space constrained application
design.
The 128Mb device is the newest member of Spansion’s
MirrorBit FL family, which offers a full range
of densities down to 4Mbit. SPI products are available
with consistent pin-outs and packaging for
4Mbit and 8Mbit devices and 16Mbit through
128Mbit devices, easing migration to higher densities
without the need to alter board layouts.
This “Universal Footprint” allows manufacturers to
develop solutions based on a single platform across
multiple product lines. They can easily add memory
capacity as application code requirements expand, or
develop multiple product variants aimed at different
price points.
The 128Mbit MirrorBit SPI FL solution is available in
industry standard 16-pin Small Outline Integrated
Circuit (SOIC) and WSON 6mm x 8mm packages with
RoHS compliance. The SOIC option provides backwards
compatibility with 16Mbit to 128Mbit devices.
The device also helps reduce time-to-market via features
such as x8 Parallel and Accelerated programming
modes. The x8 Parallel programming mode allows
the device to be programmed using eight pins at
a time, rather than one, speeding factory throughput,
while Accelerated programming applies high voltage
to the device’s ACC pin, resulting in a reduction of up
to 20% in programming time.
