Smaller Chips Sound Sweeter
For ultra-compact processing of high
definition audio standards including HD-DVD
and Blu-ray, Freescale Semiconductor has
created the Symphony™ audio DSP56720 and
DSP56721 multi-core processors. The new
audio DSPs consolidate processing for the
latest decoding standards with advanced post
processing on the same chip.
Both devices feature dual DSP56300 24-bit cores,
capable of 200 MIPS and 200MHz per core to meet
the performance requirements of high definition
audio standards including DTS-HD, Dolby® Digital+
and Dolby TrueHD.
With large, integrated memories, these devices
also eliminate the need for external memory in
most consumer applications, enabling a single
chip offering that delivers a simple and cost
effective solution. The Symphony DSP56720 adds
an external memory interface for audio applications
that use external memory to accommodate
long delays such as reverbs and lip sync.
Both devices are code compatible with existing
Freescale 24-bit DSP solutions. They also
incorporate the same plug-and-play software
architecture that exists in the Freescale DSP563xx
family, allowing fast and easy migration to the
higher performance solution. In addition to
supporting the standard audio decoders, the
new processors also enhance flexibility through
customization of post-processing algorithms.
