Transceivers Extend PROFIBUS Range and Capacity

The Exar SP1486E PROFIBUS transceiver extends data transmission range compared to standard RS-485 transceivers, with data rates up to 20Mbits/s and low differential driver skew of 1ns.


In addition, 1/8th load capability allows up to 256 transceivers on the communication bus without violating the PROFIBUS specification.

The new device is a 5V powered half-duplex differential line transceiver suitable for high speed, bidirectional communication on multipoint busses. It is capable of driving a 2.7V differential output voltage into a 54Ω load and also implements advanced failsafe protection that prevents the CMOS inputs from drifting to improper logic levels when the receiver inputs are floating, shorted or open.

The Hot Swap capability allows live insertion and removal, required for use in line cards for industrial control systems. The device compiles with TIA/ EIA-485, TIA/EIA-422 and meets IEC61000-4-2 ESD protection requirements. Driver short circuit current limit and thermal shutdown protection are also provided to protect against overload conditions.
