Connect with CAN, Do More with EEPROM and Drive 8-Bit Innovations
The “9S08D” family of products includes the
DZ and two derivatives, the DN and DV. The DZ
product is the industry’s first 8-bit microcontroller
family with embedded CAN, embedded EEPROM
and on-chip emulation with the low-power and
feature rich capabilities of the continued commitment
to the S08 family, suitable for the general
market of industrial and automotive applications.
The 9S08DZ/DN/DV microcontrollers
deepen the
Freescale 8-bit portfolio
and offer a wider Flash
range, more EEPROM and
more ADC channels than
competitors. The DZ/DN/DV
are also pin compatible with
the 908AZ and 908GZ while
providing pin, peripheral
and tool compatibility with
the entire D family.
While saving the designer cost, power board
space and development time, the D family of
devices eliminates the need for external EEPROM, LVI
circuit, voltage regulator, I/O multiplexing, crystal,
Watchdog circuit, ADC and development tools.
9S08DN: Ideal for designer who needs embedded
EEPROM without CAN. The DN is ideal for
industrial applications. 9S08DV: Offered with
all that the DZ includes yet for the designer
who needs CAN without EEPROM.

S08D Family Customer Benefits
Cost and Board Space Savings
- All on-chip components help to cut costs, save board space and improve quality by eliminating the need for external EEPROM, LVI circuit, voltage regulator, input/output (I/O) multiplexing, crystal, watchdog circuit, ADC and development tools
- Pin compatibility across DZ, DV and DN families and package scalability helps to eliminate the cost of I/O multiplexers and offers future expandability
Development Time Savings
- On-chip emulation/debug reduces development time since changes can be made onboard and in real time
- Increased RAM (up to 4KB) provides C/C++ developers the required memory to create code quickly
- Commonality and familiarity of tools among S08D families helps to shorten development time
Power Savings
- S08 0.25µ technology exhibits lower power consumption and increased CPU performance when compared to its HC08 0.50µ technology predecessor. These improvements help to allow for more embedded content while maintaining a power budget.
