Solid State Relays for Indoor Security Applications
Solid state relays (SSRs), optoelectronics devices
consisting of an IR emitter and photo sensitive
MOSFET drivers in a plastic package, can replace
reed relays and other electromechanical relays
(EMRs) in many applications. Because of their
small form factor, SSRs save board space and
provide clean, bounce-free switching. They are
noise and maintenance free, and offer long life.
With no arcing during switching operations, SSRs
are capable of switching AC or DC loads.
Vishay’s VO1400AEFTR SSR provides the required
input-output isolation for security systems,
including passive infrared detectors, glass break
sensors, and other perimeter security sensors.
The device’s key features for security applications
are its low on-resistance and trigger current, and
high load voltage.
Minimizing on-resistance is a very important
concern for security system designers, as their
customers connect multiple PIRs in series. With
a low on-resistance of 5Ω, the VO1400AEFTR
permits customers to hook up more devices.
The VO1400AEFTR’s low input trigger current of
1mA, compared to 7mA for EMRs, allows direct
interface with digital logic without the need for
expensive drivers. The load voltage of 60V provides
extra headroom for overvoltage protection.
