Zetex + Diodes = Combining Strengths in LED Driving Applications
The recent acquisition of Zetex Semiconductors
by Diodes Incorporated creates a significant new
force in LED driving, with lighting designers now
having access to an even wider range of versatile
and highly efficient solutions.
This synergy has already proved invaluable in
the area of thermal management. The need to
effectively manage thermal performance is critical
and in many lighting applications, this puts
pressure on LED driver design. The Schottky diode,
used as a re-circulation diode in many switching
regulators topologies, requires consideration in
respect to thermal ratings as it could potentially
become unstable as the system temperature
increases, due the increase in leakage current.
This can be a significant issue since LED drivers
must be thermally stable in high current drive
solutions needed to meet luminosity specifications
in applications where elevated temperature,
environmental, and end product enclosures are
key factors.
The combination of the expanded Zetex LED driver
product series, coupled with the Diodes Super
Barrier Rectifier® (SBR®) technology, tackles the
thermal performance needs in many LED lighting
circuits.
Diodes Zetex LED Driver Family Expanded
The Zetex LED Driver series has been expanded
with the introduction of three new miniature LED
drivers offering thermal performance, improved
accuracy and dimming capability. Housed in
TSOT23-5 and thermally enhanced DFN6 packages,
the highly integrated ZXLD1352, ZXLD1356
and ZXLD1366 deliver adjustable output currents
of 350mA, 550mA and 1A respectively, and suit
a broad range of automotive, architectural and
industrial lighting applications.
With an output current accuracy of typically better
than 1%, the ZXLD1356 and ZXLD1366 provide
users with highly accurate current matching at
working voltages up to 60V. Capable of producing
output powers of 30W and 48W respectively,
these TSOT23-5 and 3mm x 3mm DFN6 packaged
drivers will support up to 15 LEDs in an array of
applications requiring minimum footprint and
maximum efficiency.
Operating from a 7V to 30V supply and capable of
producing an output current of up to 350mA, the
2.8mm x 2.9mm TSOT23-5 packaged ZXLD1352
can provide up to 8W of power for driving chains of
up to 10 LEDs. With a large PWM dimming ratio of
1000:1, the driver offers highly flexible brightness
control and accurate color mixing.
Super Barrier Rectifiers (SBR) Provide Increased Thermal Capabilities
SBR technology is a unique Diodes Incorporated
patented technology that combines a lower
forward voltage (Vf) than comparable Schottky
diodes, while possessing the thermal stability
and high reliability characteristics of fast/ultra/hyperfast diodes.
With significantly higher thermal runaway
capability than Schottky diodes, the key benefits
of SBR rectifiers are shown below:
- Higher operating temperature ratings: 150°C to 175°C
- Less susceptible to thermal runaway
- Potential of eliminating the use of a heatsink
SBR rectifiers are available in a range of packages
including the proprietary PowerDI® 123 that
guarantees both space saving and high power
density due to its excellent thermal performance,
making the solution reliable at high temperature.
