Freescale’s MC34844 is a 10-channel light emitting diode (LED) driver with integrated boost converter for use in liquid crystal display (LCD) backlights. It is designed to provide LED current control and pulse width modulation (PWM) in monitors from 10” to 27” and a more uniform display and improved image quality through highly accurate LED current matching.

With the capability of driving up to 160 LEDs in 10 parallel strings, the device is capable of driving LED backlights up to 25W while supporting PWM, I²C or SM-bus control. LED current in the 10 LED channels is matched to within ±2% and can be programmed via the I²C/SM-bus interface. The PWM generator allows for LED dimming, providing an improved picture and longer screen life. The device can also deliver more consistent performance over the lifetime of the LEDs by compensating for optical and temperature degradation.
